Thanks to the advanced battery research of scientists at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), a new breakthrough involving magnesium batteries may soon open the doors for smaller, longer-lasting batteries for everything from cars to cell phones.

Researchers at Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory are researching plants in a $1.8 million, three-year project, in order to develop downstream uses for biomass, which can be made into biodiesel, a much cleaner alternative to conventional diesel.

A cross-country tour to promote natural gas vehicles kicked off on Monday in Long Beach, CA. The CNG From Sea to Shining Sea Road Rally will stop at 13 CNG fuel stations throughout the continental U.S. to raise awareness about gasoline alternatives.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced up to $30 million in funding for a new program that aids the development of technologies that use renewable energy to convert air and water into cost-competitive liquid fuels. ARPA-E advanced high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment.
