Natural gas vehicle training consistently ranks as one of the most popular subjects taught by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC). The NAFTC hosts several natural gas courses each year; most recently, classes were held at its headquarters in Morgantown, WV.

In December, training participants gathered to complete the consortium’s Light-Duty Natural Gas Vehicle Train the Trainer course and the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicle Fuel System Inspector Train the Trainer Course.

Train the trainer courses show participants how to format the materials from NAFTC curricula and present the information to their classes.

The three-day Light-Duty Natural Gas Vehicle course is a combination of classroom and hands-on training designed for the professional technician or automotive student and covers vehicle safety, service procedures, vehicle systems, and the nature of gaseous fuels.

The CNG Vehicle Fuel System Inspector course teaches students a working knowledge of the types of fuel system components used in CNG vehicles, how to inspect components for damage and deterioration, and how to safely handle CNG cylinders and fuel lines.

“The participants, who were from new consortium member school, Pulaski Community College in Arkansas, were excited to add natural gas training to their courses.” said Mark Schmidt, NAFTC instructor. “The natural gas is growing is growing in popularity in Arkansas and they are looking forward to taking advantage of the new industry and fueling options.”

The NAFTC’s courses, along with recommended independent study, help prepare technicians to successfully pass the ASE F1 Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle exam and the CSA International natural gas vehicle exam.
