This year’s National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day Odyssey National Kickoff Event, co-hosted by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) and Greater Indiana Clean Cities, will be the largest since Odyssey’s inception in 2002. The event will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at White River State Park in Indianapolis.

Alliance Autogas, ROUSH, Vectren Energy, Clean Energy, Thortons Inc. Indiana Corn Marketing Council, and Indiana Soybean Alliance, will sponsor the kickoff event. Honda and Toyota are also national sponsors of National AFV Day Odyssey. In addition, the NAFTC and Greater Indiana Clean Cities have partnered with the Indianapolis Colts (National Football League team) to provide on-site activities and promotional assistance.

More than a thousand attendees are anticipated for the Odyssey Day event at White River State Park. At this event and the more than 160 simultaneously occurring events across the country, attendees will have the opportunity to test drive vehicles running on various alternative fuels and technologies, view more than 50 informational displays and dozens of vehicles, enjoy vendor presentations, interact with Smokey Bear, and listen to live music throughout the day on the main stage.

“We’ve done very well this year,” said NAFTC Executive Director, and National Coordinator of National AFV Day Odyssey, Al Ebron. “Our initial goal was 150 sites, and we surpassed that. Other goals include more than 250,000 attendees and more than 100 million reached through media and internet.”

The Indianapolis Colts will provide use of their FanZone stage at the kickoff event and the team’s Colts-In-Motion traveling museum. Two Colts cheerleaders will be on-site to sign autographs and take pictures with the attendees. In addition, four VIP sideline tickets to the Colts’ December 9 home game against the Tennessee Titans will be given away to attendees.

The Colts will also provide pre-event advertising for the Indianapolis National AFV Odyssey national kickoff on October 18. It will include posts on the Colts’ official facebook page, which has 1.5 million fans, advertising on the electronic billboards in the Outdoor Marquee of Lucas Oil Stadium from October 1 to October 18, radio spots during Colts broadcasts, an ad in the Scout (the Colt’s game day program), and an ad on the stadium jumbotron screen during the October 7 Colts/Packers game in front of 63,000 fans.

We’re very excited about the opportunity to kick off National AFV Day Odyssey in Indianapolis this year,” said Ebron. “This event serves as the pulse across America for the promotion of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles, and there are going to be a lot of special activities at this year’s kickoff event. Odyssey is the largest event of its kind, and we are proud of its mission, as we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the event, established to promote the use of and provide education about alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. Hundreds of thousands of participants are anticipated to attend events nationwide, as they seek answers to how they can help make a difference with the nation’s dependence on petroleum.”

AmeriCorps NCCC members will work with the NAFTC to help put on Odyssey events in various locations across the country. One team of AmeriCorps NCCC members will work in Indianapolis, helping to conduct the National AFV Day Odyssey Kickoff Event. Other teams of AmeriCorps NCCC volunteers will work with schools in the Nashville, Tennessee area. A team was scheduled for the Atlanta, Georgia area’s events but the team was called for disaster relief in Mississippi.
