Honda’s new electric model of the Fit EV recently set records in its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing. Honda is releasing the 2013 Fit EV in California and Oregon in July and plans to bring it to East Coast markets early next year.

“Just as important as the industry-leading fuel-efficiency and fast recharging time… the 2013 Fit EV will be an absolute kick to drive,” said Steve Center, vice president of the American Honda Environmental Business Development Office.

The Fit EV’s battery lasted a record 82 miles in its EPA test. Its 118 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) will be the highest on the market, and its consumption rating of 29 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 miles will be the lowest.

In its summer release on the west coast, the Fit EV is being offered with free collision insurance included and with a policy that has a free deductible. Honda’s current plans are to make 1,100 models of the car available over the next two years. It currently cannot be purchased out right and will be available through a three year, $389 a month lease.

“This is a platform for Honda to continue refining and developing battery electric technology towards our mass-production EV in a few short years,” said Honda spokeswoman Angie Nucci.

Based on the popular five door Honda Fit model, the EV has a 92 kilowatt coaxial electric motor and a 20 kWh lithium battery pack. Included with the Fit is an onboard charger which allows the vehicle to be plugged into any 120 or 240 volt AC power supply. According to Honda, the battery can be recharged in less than three hours. Charging can be controlled with an interactive remote control included with purchase or through an available smartphone application.

The Fit EV’s three settings are normal, sport and ECO. Normal is primarily for city driving and sport helps the car run more efficiently once it is up to speed. ECO mode is an option to increase energy efficiency. The mode electronically assists the motor and reduces the overall load on the engine.
